After-action reviews

Capture lessons and follow-up actions.

Is this your level?

This path fits when…

  • Your team already uses an approved AI assistant or AI-enabled security platform.
  • The same task occurs weekly, monthly, or across multiple analysts or sites.
  • You can obtain de-identified operational exports or approved documents for analysis.
  • You need evidence for governance, procurement, tuning, or process improvement.

Operating principles

Practice the controls with the workflow.

01

Define the data contract

List allowed fields, prohibited fields, retention, access, transfer, and deletion before automating an export or upload.

02

Compare with a baseline

Measure the assisted workflow against current time, completeness, error, and rework—not against a vendor demonstration.

03

Design exception handling

State what happens when the model is unavailable, the input is incomplete, or the result conflicts with the source system.

04

Separate recommendation from decision

The workflow can prioritize review or expose missing evidence. Named roles still approve rules, vendors, corrective actions, and operational changes.

30-day path

Build capability through evidence, not consumption.

  1. Week 1

    Write the workflow contract

Define the task, frequency, approved fields, prohibited fields, output, reviewer, stop conditions, and record-retention rule.

  2. Week 2

    Build the baseline

Process a representative sample using the current method. Record handling time, completeness, correction rate, and unresolved exceptions.

  3. Week 3

    Run a bounded comparison

Use the AI-assisted method on the same type of sample. Preserve prompts, configuration, corrections, and source references.

  4. Week 4

    Decide and document

Compare performance, review false confidence and missed cases, then continue, revise, or stop with a named owner and next review date.

Readiness to advance

The next level begins when the consequence and system change.

Move to the expert path when the use case crosses systems, influences architecture, depends on live operational telemetry, requires representative performance testing, or creates material lifecycle and integration risk.
